I am going to try this again this weekend, creating identical environments. I would also expect that PII-350 should outperform M2-233 in every test.

I was thinking about other possible reasons (besides the fact that the built in Fast Ethernet chip in the Compaq could be a piece of crap). 2 things that came to mind are:

1. The program is 16 bit, and the old P6 core in PPro was not very good at dealing with 16 bit software, but that was supposedly fixed in PII.
2. The piece of code where all the processing is done is fairly small, and may fit into M2s 64K unified cache, while it may not fit in PII 32+32K L1.

I'll let you know more this weekend.
