You are correct in that aspect. In the United States, all patent applications are considered secret. In the rest of the world, an application is printed on the 18th month after the date of filing. The US, on the other hand, only publishes when an application goes to patent.

That and the fact that the patent office in your town doesn't have a clue as to what the patent office in my town is up to.

I disagree. The US PTO is located in a centralized site in Crystal City, Virginia. Actually, it is a few blocks from the Pentagon and very close to National Airport.
