***OT*** a legend from the elders to the children

SINGING RIVER

This is a story about a man named Singing River. He was young but he was old in spirit. Singing River was not a great hunter nor a great dancer. Many people of his tribe saw him as man with nothing to offer. Even the young women of his tribe had no interest in him to them he was not even a man he was just an invisible being. So Singing River decided one day to leave the village for he felt he had shamed his people. So he started his long endless walk until he came upon the hillside that he would make his home. He made a fire and cooked the deer that had taken him many days to capture. While he ate he watched the sun set for it was a beautiful sight. Then he laid upon his deerskin bed and he fell into a deep sleep. For many years Singing River lived alone on the hillside but he yearned to be with his people. But not only had he thought of his people but he could never forget the love he had in his heart for the lovely maiden Silent River. He dreamed of someday marrying her and off the many children they would have. But then the thought passed and tears welled in his eyes for he knew it would forever be a dream. So then Singing River began to sing of his sorrowed heart and while he was singing he heard a sound below and he looked and it was Chief Running Bear. Singing River spoke to the Great Chief, he asked the Chief with saddened heart, How did you find me? and how did you know I was here? The Chief said I found you my son because your sorrowed song drifted to me in the mountains above and I followed the words and they led me to you. Then the Chief spoke again there is another reason why I came our land is dying and it has become barren. Singing Water spoke in an angered voice, Why have you come for me? For there is nothing I can do. Then the Chief said to Singing River you must be lonely upon this hillside by yourself then the Chief said please come with me my child for you are needed. So Singing River gathered his belongings from the hillside and he and the Chief began there long journey back home. The Chief and Singing River arrived in the village and Singing River was surprised to see such despair upon his peoples faces. The land was barren like the Great Chief had told him but Singing River saw only happiness for he was home once more with his people. Then for some unknown reason Singing River looked into the heavens above and he began to sing and his people began to notice him. He kept on singing and the more he sang the harder the rain fell and no more was the land dry and barren. So on that day Singing River became a hero and that never again would he carry shame for he had saved his people and there sacred ground. He told the people of the Great Chief Running Bear who had come to claim him from his home upon the hillside. The people looked at him with great awe and said to him it must have been his spirit that came for you for our Great Chief Running Bear had died many years ago. So then the village proclaimed Singing Bear their new Chief and also upon this day he married the beautiful Silent River that he had dreamed of for many years and they were blessed with many children. Chief Singing River always carried a great message he always told each child of the village not everyone is good at everything but each one of you my children hold a special gift that will someday be needed. Then one day his death came and the Great Chief came to claim him many people cried even the many women who had once shunned him. But he would not be forgotten because the tears of his people made a river and each time the people felt despair they would hear the singing of Chief Singing River once more. So whenever a river sings people remember the Great Chief who had once been a man they had felt had no great purpose.
