Selling the gold fund and buying another or buying back after a month is a good way to offset your gains in AMAT when you sell.

Puts are expensive, generally speaking, now as a hedge. I would either do the offset or short against the box to move the gain to next year. The offset really seems like a good idea to me.

I would not buy puts on it now as a speculation because it is rather low-priced (on an absolute basis, unless I was very bearish -- I'll make an exception soon along these lines for Micron). By the way UTEK just reported a disaster. Revs cut by 2/3 and a much wider loss than expected -- don't know if it will affect AMAT tomorrow or not.
