While we waited for the towtruck, the custodian told us he was from Cuba; he was a political refugee and had spent two years in jail for speaking out on human rights. He had been an Economics professor and now was trying to learn English in hopes of teaching Spanish here. 'We tried to give him something --he was as covered with mud as Dan- but he refused, saying that people needed just to be good to one another. He made me cry.
I could never, ever close my country's doors against someone like him.
He made the comment that he was appalled with many of the Mexicans he works with who have been here ten years and still speak no English. He has taught himself, a word a day. We were all pretty impressed and moved by the meeting.
