Craig,

If there is any disk access in your code network access times will overwhelm CPU speed.

No disk access. The entire database fits in the disk cache of the server.

When I installed my first 10/100 network, I noticed zero improvement over 10BaseT. But after a lot of futzing around I discovered that one of the patch cables wasn't up to snuff. A quick cable switch and access times improved 10-to-1!

The cable is ok. I had another Cyrix based PC connected to the same port, and it performed as well as the other I used for the test. The inly 2 variables are the network card, which I am going replace with identical 3com card, and operating system, (NT Dos window vs. plain dos, which I am going to equalize by booting from a floppy.

There is a remote possibility that Compaq didn't setup PII-350 as 350, but some lower speed. I am not sure how to check that.

I will keep you posted on this mini-mystery.

Joe
