Another Banshee board maker: AOpen announced release of a new graphics accelerator card incorporating 3Dfx's Voodoo Banshee that fully integrates 2D and 3D graphics in a single, powerful chip, combining a new 2D engine with the core of its most powerful 3D-only chipset, Voodoo 2. Banshee is 3Dfx's latest 2D/3D solution. Unlike the Voodoo 2, it doesn't require an additional 2D part. The 128-bit 2D core is also supposed to make Banshee the fastest DOS game platform. It offers an integrated 250MHz RAMDAC to enable good quality 2D. Banshee also comes with full DVD support, enabling a hardware assist for software DVD and a full VMI interface for single slot hardware DVD. Voodoo Banshee delivers a dedicated high-speed 128-bit interface to external memory with an internal 256-bit data path for optimized memory utilization. In addition, it accelerates the Microsoft Windows driver interface (GDI) and can use block write support for optimal SGRAM performance. Voodoo Banshee supports 4, 8, or 16MB of SGRAM memory and also includes support for 16MB of SDRAM. Voodoo Banshee's 128-bit video graphics adapter (VGA) architecture boosts the performance of legacy DOS games and applications. Moreover, the card delivers a high level of VGA compatibility and 3D acceleration (through the use of the popular Voodoo 2 chipset) and enhanced performance for Pentium II processors. The first 0.35 micron part will run with either SDRAM or SGRAM at 100MHz memory bus, thus offering 100M-pixel 3D fill rate, the later 0.25 micron part will do 125MHz, thus 125M-pixel fill rate. Banshee provides direct hardware polygon support that allows for the immediate drawing of polygons based on vertex data rather than relying on a middle step of software rasterization or drawing each line in the polygon. Banshee will also support 256 raster operations (ROPS) and will perform 99 percent of the ROPS/Blit combination in hardware rather than relying on software for these frequently used calls. Cards will be compatible with both Voodoo flavors and will be optimized for Microsoft's upcoming DirectX 6.0, as well as Glide and OpenGL.
