<<October 22, 1998 IMF toes country line with economic forecasts WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior IMF official conceded Thursday that politics played a role in its closely watched economic forecasts and said the fund could not put out figures substantially below those from its member states. IMF Chief Economist Michael Mussa told reporters that the fund, which has revised world economic growth forecasts down sharply in its latest survey of global economic trends, watched internal and external predictions before putting out its own. "An international agency cannot publish forecasts substantially below internal or outside forecasts," he said during a day-long seminar at the libertarian Cato Institute.>>
