CPQ needs to use more AMD chips if it wants to stay ahead of HP in low
end sales. The HP machines using AMD chips were selling faster than higher priced Compaq's made with Intel CPU's. My in store observation made recently when I went shopping for another computer.

just because IBM can't make money in the consumer market (or low end corporate desktop) doesn't mean that others cannot..

I agree. IBM's stock has been moving up but as I listen to the news it all seems tied to the monster government contracts and royalty residuals it seems to be getting (like from the country of France).

The IBM weakness seems to be that it has no fundamental grass roots sales. No OS. No big PC business. This means that as CPQ moves up the ladder into the IBM stronghold of mainframes and large contract bidding, CPQ may be better able to undercut IBM because CPQ always has the PC business for cash flow.
