Unless your are the only user at the time, it takes almost exactly the same number of milliseconds to access a cached database as an uncached database. That is because Windows usually permits local caching only until a second user joins the action. That is because Windows usually permits local caching only until a second user joins the action. And networks are often slower than hard drives (esxpecially at 10BaseT speeds).

The data is actually on a Novell server, the network is 100Mbs Fast Ethernet, both computers are on a switch port, and I was the only user on the server at the time.

Another observation I can share is that the Cyrix client generated a lot more activity on the server. The CPU utilization of the server was higher, meaning it was requesting data at faster rate.

I am going to play with all this again tomorrow.
