On the last day of August and the October 8 bottom, the dow went below the 20% point from the intraday high that was on 7/17 as I recall. You can see it on any chart. It did, however, not close below the 20% point, so we technically never had a bear market. With the nas suffering an unheard of 35% drop with declining rates, and the russell 2000 getting beaten even worse, I think we can all agree we did have a bear market and a pretty bad one. The underpinnings of the market were weakening in July of 1997, ie, and the russell started its plunge in April.
