Oh well.> Interesting how even the AMD supporters are moving away from the "you don't need that much power" argument, especially after the big K7 presentation earlier this month. <Maybe Sequent will come out with a low-budget version that runs 32 400-MHz AMD K6-2s.> It's interesting to know that even if Sequent shoehorns multiprocessor capabilities into a theoretical 32-way K6-2 server, the cost isn't going to be much different from the 32-way Xeon server. This is because the cost of adding multiprocessor capabilities to the K6-2 is going to render its lower price irrelevant, and its performance is going to stink anyway. It's hard to imagine even the K7 being used by Sequent because the processor features a point-to-point bus, which means Sequent will have to build crossbars to support multiple K7's. Not only will those crossbars add to the system cost, but they also add an extra layer of latency which will hurt performance. In contrast, Xeon's 4-way SMP capabilities lends itself well to Sequent's style of server architecture. Tenchusatsu
