Ericsson to supply an advanced fibre optic protection system to Venezuela

Ericsson has signed a three-year USD 28 million (SEK 218 million) general agreement to provide secure, state-of-the-art telecommuni-cations solutions to Venezuela's CANTV (Compañía Anónima Nacional Telefonos de Venezuela).

CANTV, one of Latin America's leading telecommunications operators offering switched, fixed local, domestic and international long distance telephone services, will deploy Ericsson Transport Network Architecture (ETNA) solutions. These solutions will include an advanced fibre optic protection system - the first to be deployed in Latin America - that ensures much higher traffic capacity and self-healing protection.

The contract places Ericsson as the supply leader of the SDH technology in Venezuela, increasing the company's market share for this technology in the country to 70%. Additionally, it represents the beginning of a future relationship partner-supplier between Ericsson and CANTV/GTE that has lasted for more than 50 years.

Ericsson is a leader in the provision of network protection systems and the company has recently announced that it is first to offer commercially available optical layer protection with its Ericsson Optical Networking (ERION ) platform. Protection systems, such as that integral to the eight Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) rings supplied to CANTV, are crucial to today's network operators. Responsible for handling vast amounts of voice and increasingly sensitive data traffic, network service can be jeopardized by fibre cuts. Ericsson protection systems safeguards against loss of service caused by such incidents, with powerful and seamless restoration.

The SDH solutions will enable CANTV to increase their capacity and enhance their capability. The benefits will be improved telephony services as well as new datacom/multimedia services based on ATM and ADSL technologies at transport speeds of 155 Mbps, 620 Mbps and 2,5 Gbps. As part of the agreement, Ericsson will also provide cross connects and management systems for inter- exchanges and enterprise networks, covering the cities of Caracas, Valencia, Barquisimeto, Puerto La Cruz, Maracay and Puerto Ordaz.

"The orders received during the present year reaffirms CANTV's confidence in Ericsson," said Dieter Nagel, Director of Marketing for Latin America and Spain at Ericsson Business Unit Transport and Cable Networks.

Based in Horsham, UK, Ericsson Business Unit Transport and Cable Networks has developed, alongside its business partners, a range of technologies to build transport and access networks ready for the broadband revolution. Ericsson offers a full transport networks portfolio. The portfolio includes solutions based on SDH, PDH (Plesiosynchronous Digital Hierarchy), as well as DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing). More than 70 customers in over 50 countries worldwide have already chosen transport network systems from Ericsson.

Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecoms world, with communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with the freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over.

Ericsson awarded mobile network expansion contract in Hebei

Ericsson has signed a mobile network contract with Hebei Post & Telecommunications Administration (HPTA) in China valued at close to USD 110 million (SEK 860 million).

Divided into two parts, the contract includes the fifth phase expansion of the Hebei province GSM network and the sixth phase expansion of the province's TACS network.

The two projects are scheduled for completion in June 1999. Upon completion the capacity of the Ericsson supplied GSM network in Hebei will reach 1.1 million subscribers, while the Hebei province's TACS network capacity will increase to 450,000 subscribers. The contract was signed locally by the joint venture Beijing Ericsson Mobile Communication.

Ericsson China has more than 3,600 employees, 23 offices in different parts of the country and nine joint ventures that provide a full range of communications solutions and services.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For the GSM network expansion, Ericsson's new R7 software will be installed in the Mobile Switching Center (MSC), which meets all the requirements of Chinese MAP version 2. MAP is a comprehensive signalling scheme which has been developed specially for GSM networks.

R7 is a new GSM software platform providing new value-added services. In addition, GSM 1800 equipment and Prepaid system will be added to the existing GSM network.

The RBS889, Ericsson's new micro radio base station, will be installed for the expansion of the TACS network. It's the first time RBS899 will be used in China to provide a powerful solution for traffic congestion and to improve system capacity. A software of Hierarchical Cell Structure (HCS) will be put in the MSC, enabling handling of larger traffic volumes. Also a new filter will be attached enabling the system to make full use of the existing TACS frequency spectrum.

In 1991, Hebei PTA introduced Ericsson's TACS system, which covers all 11 cities in the province. In 1995, the Ericsson GSM 900 system was introduced by Hebei PTA, currently deployed in six cities in the northern part of the province.

Beijing Ericsson Mobile Communication Co. Ltd. is a joint venture set up in August 1995. It is owned by the Chinese National Post & Telecommunications Industry Corporation and Ericsson. The joint venture manufactures and packages mobile communication systems and terminals. It also provides services such as network design, implementation and maintenance.

Ericsson and Telia to further trial new solution combining GSM and IP

Ericsson and operator Telia will conduct further trials of business communication services providing GSM wireless connectivity over IP-based enterprise networks. The trials will utilize Ericsson's 'GSM on the Net' combining GSM and IP technology.

GSM on the Net uses small radio base stations to add local-area GSM coverage to enterprise LANs (Local Area Networks), giving users what's in effect their own mini GSM network.

With a seamless one number, subscribers can use different terminals such as a GSM phone, PC phone, multimedia terminal or fixed IP phone, depending on their communication needs - with no or low charges - for internal calls. Users get both local and global mobility with a GSM phone.

Telia will conduct the trials starting in January 1999 with a selected group of business customers, using the experience and feedback to further tailor the services prior to commercial launch.

"GSM on the Net services represents a paradigm shift for our business
customers. They will be able to achieve full wireless connectivity over existing IP-LAN infrastructure, with the added benefit of seamless global coverage. Ultimately this technology could replace the traditional office phone systems entirely," says Per Englund, Director of Mobile Business Solutions at Telia.

"The integration of the field proven GSM technology with the cost efficiency of IP technology is a powerful combination that will mean tangible business benefits to companies," says Bengt-Åke Ljudén, Marketing Manager for GSM on the Net at Ericsson.

Besides providing seamless GSM access, GSM on the Net also supports improving personal and organizational productivity through computer-telephony integration. Potential integrated applications include web-initiated telephony, directory-assisted dialling, unified messaging and advanced conferencing and application-sharing using voice, datacoms and video.

GSM is the world's most widely deployed digital wireless communications standard. Ericsson is the leader in GSM, with almost half of the world's 115 million GSM subscribers connected by Ericsson systems.

Telia is the leading supplier of telecom-based information services in the Nordic/Baltic region. At the same time, "seamless" pan-European and global services are being realized through powerful alliances and partnerships in Europe and around the world. Annual turnover 1997 reached 46,444 MSEK and the number of employees amounted to approx. 34,000.
