Re "method". Y'all of course are correct that a patent only applies to a single method of accomplishing something. That is why different companies can have distinct patents for accomplishing the same thing but by slightly different methods and neither infringes on the other. Remember, reverse engineering? There is no theoretical reason why two companies cannot both have valid patents for "soft handoff". It's the technical steps they take to get to the result that count.
