Stephen, this article concerning the government's ability to track Cellular/PCS users is interesting from a number of perspectives. It transcends the normal pole climbing sleuth's role by several orders of intelligence gathering magnitude. It goes far beyond calling line ID, and automatic number identification functions. The latter can easily be spoofed through neutral switching centers and certain forms of call forwarding.

Monitoring in wireless will be enhanced by locator functions now being mandated in E-911 features, which utilizes GPS [linked to the AIN and wireless OSS databases] to gain information about a caller's whereabouts to within several hundred feet soon, and even more stringently in the future.

I can just see the secondary market action now for such a facility. Spouses, private investigators, bosses, truant and parole officers... they'd all like a piece of that action. And when IP over cellular becomes prevalent... can you spell traceroute? [g]
