I am new to this thread. I came upon Martek out of necessity rather than out of investor research. My wife was forced to stop breast feeding our latest child at 4 weeks. I did research on the internet and came upon Martek and their product Formulaid. I called the company and found out that formulas that contain DHA/ARA are not available in the US or Canada, and that they could not help me purchase such formula themselves. They basically told me I had to go to europe or Israel myself to get the formulas.
After two week of much work I was able through friends to get some of the formulas from Spain and Israel. I also flew to Mexico where after some difficulty was able to buy one of those formulas down there. All in all it was very time and money consuming, but my baby now has what I feel is a superior formula.
Couple points I would like to point out;
1) None of the formula packages they mention by name Formulaid or Martek. They just state that they contain 'long chain fatty acids'

2) Many of the formulas that contain Formulaid in Europe are geared towards low-birthweight babies and you need a prescription from a doctor.

3) One of these formulas is made in the US and shipped abroad. This one is not sold in the US. This seemed odd to me.

4) My impression is that the american formula companies really do not want to add DHA/ARA to their formulas because no one is really pressuring them to do so.

5) In the latest issue of American Baby on page 99 they have a small article on DHA in baby formulas. They seem lukewarm to the concept and do no mention Martek or Formulaid.

I have read the medical studies done using DHA/ARA and they seem convincing to me. My own pediatricion has not even heard of DHA!! I think there has to be done some serious education done concerning these fatty acids. I also think that Martek needs to get their own name associated with these fatty acids.

Any comments would be appreciated...KAZHAK
