Korea protests U.S. ban on IMF aid to 5 Korean industries

Oct 23, 1998 - The Korean government has issued a protest to the United States over a bill pending in the U.S. Congress that would ban additional International Monetary Fund assistance to five Korean industries.

The U.S. appropriations bill, which includes additional funding for the IMF, would require that no IMF resources be extended toward the Korean semiconductor, automobile, steel, shipbuilding or textile and apparel industries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade welcomed the proposed US$18 billion additional funding for the IMF but contended that the provision would harm Korea's industries and damage the nation's credibility as a whole.

--->Intel might have been better off putting $500M in a Taiwan DRAM fab

With the money they have and the number of deals being made it may not be too far out to believe that -- HA!!
