Mohan- Well, it's always good, IMO, to listen to what the "competition" has to say...Can't hurt...and could possibly help (when you least expect it)...

One has to give Gerstner additional respect because of his track record with Amex, RJR, and, of course, righting the course with IBM...
he has proven himself to be an apt manager...and, to some extent, turnaround artist..(actually, I think his record at RJR is subject to debate, but anyway...)

He has focused IBM more (but not totally) on doing what it does best, becoming more customer-focused, cutting overhead (massively), and regaining trust in the investment community (even with a relatively slow growth rate), and making IBM a lot more profitable, albeit, again, on limited growth...Great manager, great marketer...

But this is different from a technology visionary...When I hear Gerstner talk about technology, he appears to lack the conviction of someone who is running with his own ideas....kind of like the guy who listens well at the meeting and chooses the best argument to support...

This is not necessarily bad, IMO, just (like Sculley), being a technology visionary is not his strength...and could become a weakness if he overestimates his own ability, and overrules wiser minds...

Nonetheless, IBM is too slow growth for me....I am not convinced it will be superior investment over the next few years, despite its attractive service business...
