Bill- You may have a better idea of Murphy's long-term track record than me, but a couple points:

(1) I don't listen to guys like Murphy (or Kumar) to pick my stocks for me...that's what I'M FOR!...I do listen to them concerning their views on inventory problems, demand (cycles) etc...I think these guys can be right (or at least more knowledgable) about the macro-data, and be wrong about the individual stocks that they pick/knowing which stock will best benefit from the data..

My (other) point about Murphy's pick of CPQ over Dell is that (I like the fact that) he is not some blind, raging Dell bull.. supporting (self-servingly) a view that PC sales will remain strong...

Finally, although I AM a raging bull on Dell, there are an enormous amount of analysts who see (and have seen) Compaq as a buy (lately)....Murphy is certainly not alone here.....I think Compaq will be successful, albeit not at the same rate as Dell (equity appreciation) over the next few years...IMO, it is hard to build a case that one is a bad-stock picker by recommending CPQ (especially in Sept.)...it was pretty beaten down (at that point)...But you obviously have had some bad experiences (with him) in the past....so I'll take heed and rest on that note...
