Drake, each Web e-commerce application involves custom gateways to existing systems (such as inventory management) as well as the creation of systems robust enough to serve the needs of those hitting the sites (including, for example, customer service). This is apart from the issue of what it would take to generate revenue to pay for the extensive costs involved. There is a reason that successful large scale e-commerce sites (of which there are only truly a handful) regard precisely how they have done it as a "crown-jewel" level trade secret. I hope that I have clarified this a bit in a non-techy way.
