Tenchusatsu, >>> Intel may just want to specialize in the four-way SMP designs, at
least through Merced.<<<

I tend to agree, almost. Those mega-number of processor machines do tend to get out of hand. However, Intel has a stake in the "next one up" which is the eight way SMP. They're doing their own motherboard and node, I think (actually acquired along with the rest of Corollary). It should be out soon, pretty sure it was slated for 4Q. The clustered configs don't seem to be selling, either. Not to worry though, looks like the Xeon server market, straight SMP up to four way, maybe eight, is just starting to take off.
