Israel has had an unbalanced influence over US policy and activity in the Middle East since Israel was first established. It has always seemed a Western foothold in the Middle East. Maybe it always will be. I'm not sure what would happen if at some point Israel was not seen as an Ally to the US. Can't really imagine it. You are witnessing something that definitely puts the alliance to the test. I really don't think much will come of it though.

David, didn't the Israelis provide some kind of quid pro quo? The article implies it (750 Palestinian prisoners released, etc).

In general, however, I find that we make far too many "special exceptions" for the Israelis. We simply have not held them to the same standards that we apply to everyone else. This has unbalanced our MidEast policy no end.
