Mark,

There are many possibilities and it is interesting and potentially lucrative to attempt to piece together the puzzle.

What we do know is:

1. Lucent is in talks with "6 or 8 companies" covering "various sectors of the industry" and that "the talks could lead to acquisitions or partnerships." (LU CFO Peterson on 10/22)

2. From McGinn at N+I (10/21), we know that the sectors include (1) ATM, (2) enterprise and (3) wireless. (Pat Mudge can help on this, as she heard McGinn speak.) I would add (4) cable and (5) DSL.

3. We know that certain potential targets are "receptive" to being acquired and are acting in a manner not to impede an acquisition. E.g., (1) XYLN's VP Mktg Hill, who said that the company had to apply any share repurchase to employee stock options so as not to preclude an acquisition, (2) PAIR's stated receptiveness to an "appropriate" takeover offer (though I wonder what impact PAIR's announced share repurchase would have on a pooling deal). I'm sure there are others, and I'm not saying these are the ones. I'm just pointing out the publicly available corporate information. Anything that could be added would be appreciated.
