SPIRIT BEAR The ground rumbles as the bear moves swiftly. The bear stops to pick some berries from a tree and with his powerful jaws of life he begins to savor his prey. In the bushes a hunter looms the bear does not feel his presence and the bear continues to chew his find nosily and many berries drop to the ground. The bear suddenly stops what he is doing and he looks around but he does not see his end. Then from the bushes a shot rings out and the bear cries and groans and falls to the bed of leaves before him. The blood seeps from his body and a silence fills the earth. The Hunter moves toward his kill and the leaves rustle below his feet, he looks at his prize before him but this is no ordinary kill. The blood of the bear boils below his feet and before the hunter appears the Spirit of the Great Bear. The bear speaks to the hunter, and says I am no ordinary bear for you have killed the spirit that once guided you. The man looks wildly for he does not understand what he has done. The hunter says to the bear I only kill to feed my family. The bear growls once more and then he disappears in the earth below leaving the hunter alone and the bear speaks no more. So now to this day guides come to some people only in dreams and not in physical form because of the killing of the Spirit Bear long ago.
