FYI: CIBC takes profit hit

TORONTO - The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce is bracing for a hit on its bottom line because of losses in its investment banking unit.

Weakened by international market volatility, CIBC World Markets is expected to lose money in its fourth quarter, which ended Oct. 31.

Analysts are expecting this to bring CIBC's total earnings to just over $100 million, or 25 cents a share in the final quarter.

This would be a drop of 72 per cent from last year's fourth quarter when the bank's earnings were over $400 million.

One year ago, the CIBC's investment bankers were the driving force behind the bank's profits.
