In the spring of '96 I produced and wrote a full length tutorial for a popular trade mag, describing the framework of SONET. In it I mentioned the outside limits of commercially viable systems at that time, and introduced the reader (mostly LAN professionals) to the concept of WDM as the next enabler of the extended envelope. I cited four-fold soon 8-fold gains, with higher gains likely in the future... The article was published during the September time frame, just in time for the autumn trade shows that unleashed all of the now-popular name brand WDM systems we now know of... which started with 8- and 16- and 32- fold systems. Oh well...
