Land holdings are almost always in a state of flux. Due to the structure of the mining regulations in the NWT which requires regular reporting and minimum expenditures, most claims are held for two years . It is fairly rare for mineral claims to be held more than 10 years in the NWT as this is the threshold for dropping the claim or applying to the government for a mineral lease.

Consequently, Two years into an exploration rush in the NWT, opportunities abound as claims start to expire if no expenditures are recorded against them, or initial work shows little encouragement.
