I agree with you about the quid pro quo, doug. See my previous post to you. My remark - my question, rather - was based only on a quick scan of the news item that David Anderson posted. When I thought about it, I realized that an orange cannot be a quid for an apple quo.

The agreement is a political ploy. The Prez gets some publicity , then they will go back hating each other a little richer. He got nothin better to do. Hillary is in Chicago and Miss Lewinsky moved out.

Italics are my commentary
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Clinton Friday agreed to review whether to free a confessed Israeli spy from a U.S. prison, removing a last-minute obstacle that had delayed and threatened a Middle East peace accord.

''I have agreed to review this matter seriously'' at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request, Clinton said of the Jonathan Pollard spy case...........The only way I can get serious is when she was on her knees otherwise I have to take matters in my own hand

''I have made no commitment as to the outcome,'' Clinton said at a White House ceremony to sign the peace deal........And when I did I messed up her dress

The Israelis delayed a final agreement between Netanyahu and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat by demanding the immediate release of Pollard, an American who pleaded guilty to spying for Israel in 1986. He also has Israeli citizenship.

An Israeli official said the dispute, which emerged as a key stumbling block at the last moment, had been settled and that Pollard would not be flying back to Israel on Netanyahu's plane, as the Israeli leader had initially wanted.

Netanyahu thought he had an understanding that Clinton would pardon Pollard when Israel signed the agreement, Israeli sources said. But senior U.S. officials denied that Clinton had made any commitment.............. "PARDON no....Honest Mr.Netanyahu I looked it up in Websters pardon can mean many things. I was just excusing myself from burping up that Big Mac, pardon me .....well it worked before.
