Hiram - that's the tradeoff I pay for living out of the metro areas. The cable company TCI bought here had only reached our road a year before we built, so I don't see any rush on their part to get bidirectional plant in place soon. I am going to take up a friend's offer to try his Dish Network next month when we visit -- I'm bringing a PentiumII 400Mhz graphics system with me and will be doing some imaging stuff and real-time games at his place over it to kick the tires.

BTW - you can keep the birds away from the guywires with a few plastic ribbons - 'course your neighbors may object to all those streamers flapping around. <g>

xDSL though is a big deal to the LEC's I talk to - think about that massive investment in the copper - just waiting to be harvested. Again, though, the problems are localized; I don't see "universal highspeed service" anywhere on the horizon if you're tied to a phone company. If you're lucky enough to be in a new area, you have a good chance.
