From today's NYT re Friday:

Even in decline, smaller companies continued to fare better than the blue chips, with the Nasdaq market -- including some high-technology giants -- easing 0.5 percent, or 8.78 points, to 1,693.86, while the Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 1 percent, or 80.85 points, to 8,452.29. The Russell 2000, composed of small companies, managed a marginal advance.
