HP 8100i, boot disks, fasttrak, etc. con't--reply to ZP

Yes: HP rescue software uses floppies and spans CD-RWs.

If you stay with IDE, you might (re)consider the Fasttrak, if your primary HDDs aren't SCSI. That way you can keep your primary and sec MB IDE channels free for CD mastering, etc.

I finally broke down and got one with my last buycomp order. After a bit of futzing, it works like a charm in NT, dos, and 95. It also, much to my pleasure, worked great with powerquest PM and DI. I have 2 maxtor 5.7 gigs striped RAID 0, and an 11.5 gig set to "span." It feels somewhat snappier than without the striping, tho I haven't (and won't) bother to rigorously bench it. I've still a fair amount to learn about how it all works. The docs are OK, but they don't envision the kind of tweaking we've discussed here. I need to send a few requests to fasttrak, as I have several questions, some still formulating (just got this running this AM) to which I can't find answers.

The trick is getting everything to boot properly. I did not realize that MB IDE channels with HDDs attached (but not CDs or other devices) apparantly need to be DISABLED in the bios in order for the fasttrak drives to be bootable. This creates a few complications. Most noteably, win95b doesn't seem to be able to see the HDD at all with the bios disabled. But I'm getting ahead on myself--I can post more on this when I know more.

Sorry the Ricoh/adaptec combo is causing so many problems. That should be a pretty stable setup, I would think.

BTW, a usenet poster indicated that the 8110i does NOT come with the disaster recovery software. I haven't seen this confirmed.

The HP unit is remarkably quiet, in both read and write modes.

I too really like the idea of using CD's as part of a KOT solution. I'm still getting all the options and restrictions sorted out, and will post more when I know more.

Thanks for the feedback on the write speeds. I'm leaning towards the faster Yamaha.

I'd like to go Plextor, but I don't want to wait too long, and AFAIK they haven't even been announced yet. I'm pretty surprised at the prices that buycomp is hitting on the new yamahas, compared to what older units are going for. Please let me know if you hear anything concrete about the Plextors soon.

BTW, FWIW, it might be useful to have a sub-thread devoted to merchants. Lots of discussions seem to be involving them lately--shopping.com, pcnet, mushkin, etc. Feel free to ignore, too--what you really need are more thread burdens, I'm sure. :)

Regards,

Dave
