Don, that's some pretty good "recollecting" on your part.

>>My recollection is that ADSL was $60 / month plus an install fee of around $150.<<

But you say:

>>there would of course be long distance charges for calling servers outside the local calling area.<<

Not if the dsl is used as a substitution for a dialup ISP line. The same model would likely apply, by first accessing the ISP and then being routed to your destination. There is no way, that I am aware of, to complete a long distance call using dsl in the same manner as an ISDN call where end to end dsl service is provided by a carrier on a tariffed basis at both ends of the session.

For a sampling of what DSL rates are beginning to look like (they're really all over the map, as are their speeds), go to US West's page at:

uswest.com

While some of the more competitive data clecs are now beginning to deploy at moderately reduced rates, it's really a bummer for them to make breakeven and crossover take place in under two + years, without supplying other forms of revenue producing activities... such as LD, which as I've already stated is not part and parcel of pure dsl service, unless they get into VoIP services, and content. Of course, the data clecs could elect to go into splitter type voice, using end office switching, but then that's a whole other form of investment they must be prepared to endure.

HTH, Frank Coluccio
