I agree with this. I believe that the bad news for apps in general
gives Oracle some breathing room (as you have said many times). I
also think that 8i can make possible a slightly different model for
how apps are developed and sold, as well as making it a lot easier
for new kinds of applications to get developed. That said, Oracle
has to perform better than they have in the past in this space, or
it will just be another missed opportunity. The lip-service sounds
promising, but whether that means anything more substantial is
happening I don't know.

My take regarding Oracle Apps recent underperformance is that Oracle's been the victim of its own success in the past, getting fat, dumb, and happy, content to cruise. Thus, the minimal leveraging of its differentiating engine technology. Now that competitive threats to Oracle's apps growth are finally affecting Larry's net worth, you can look forward to a leaner, much meaner Oracle in the Apps space.

Imagine what Oracle could do to SAP and Psft if the Apps development folks finally started to capitalize on some of that technology they've put into O8i.

Weaselsoft and the poor SAPs still have to port to other engines, including the lowest common denominator - SQL Server.

I want to see one thing that Oracle apps can do better than Sap or Psft.

Michelle,

What about release 11 being 100% java!

Tom

Michelle,

Can you provide some examples of Oracle Apps customers that have switched to a competing apps suite? And could you put a time dimension to that how (many/when) over the past year or so?

Thanks,

Jesse
