Rudedog,

you bring up some good points but I will disagree with you that IBM is weak in the marketing of this push. IBM will not market the NC directly but by selling it to their large corp. accounts as a complete end-to-end solution. The NC will be an integrated component of the solution. They dont need a Compaq or any other PC/Intel OEM to make this happen.

Also, IBM is extremely powerful in the application software solutions business. Their E-Commerce and enterprise software solutions are untouchable by any of their competitors. IBM is not just AS/400 and mainframe sales. In fact, their most thriving area of business is their IBM Global Services business (meaning its not their hardware or software, but in the integration of these IBM products as well as non-IBM products to meet customer business needs. They also have strong account control because of the large penetration of very large accounts via their long-term out-sourcing agreements (i.e. McDonnell Douglas class enterprises).

This means IBM has huge leverage to push whatever ideas they wish to push - as long as they meet the "Value Proposition" commitments they have promised their customers.

I guess we will all have to see who's predictions are more accurate in the next couple years.
