Off Topic: "Not to digress, but how satisfied are you with the cable modem? Does it work reliably or do you have to keep reconnecting? Are you using one with the phone up-link or cable up-link? Whose product?"

My cable modem hook-up is through TCI cable. I had trouble after the initial hook-up but the technicians returned quickly. They found no trouble, yet the system worked fine after they revised my setup. Over the last two weeks I had one late evening I could not connect. My TV's did not have cable either on that occasion but the connection was repaired by the next morning.

Compared to my previous phone system the cable modem is great (the phone system was terrible in that I could not transfer faster than 31K and it dropped out a lot). The @HOME service provider has the usual bells and whistles. I usually bypass the bells and whistles and go straight to e-mail, favorites or search. The system connects quick and I have had no trouble with disconnects. One big advantage is I can leave it hooked up constantly without tying up my business line. This makes it easier to check my e-mails when I am expecting someone to contact me. The technicians told me a constant hook up does not add to electronic traffic as long as I am not transferring something.

Some things do not transfer faster. I do not seem to get more speed with SI in between posts. I believe the SI output is the delay. I also think overcrowding will be a problem with some servers until they bring their hardware up to a higher level.

With faster connections, video and sound transfer faster than they play so I get immediate play at the beginning while the article is still transferring. It is preferable over text because it is much easier than reading text. I imagine things like conference calls and even SI posts available in audio or audio/visual format some day. This would save a lot of tired eyes on days that we do heavy research.
However, we will need more hard drive capacity if we save much for review later when we want to make important investment decisions.

Regards,

Mark
