Novell Teams With Tivoli -- Deal Is Part Of Plan For End-To-End Network Management
Monua Janah with James Governor

Novell is expected to follow up last week's agreement with Lucent Technologies by forging closer ties with Tivoli Systems Inc. The partnerships are part of Novell's push to provide customers with end-to-end network management-and to propagate Novell's software more widely.

Novell and Tivoli, IBM's enterprise management software company, are planning a series of announcements over the next few months, sources say. This relationship will build on NetWare support that Tivoli included in version 3.6 of its Tivoli Enterprise management framework, which was launched last month.

Synergies exist between their products, both companies say-but they refused to give details about plans for joint efforts. The next disclosure is likely to include simpler administration of NetWare servers. Tivoli and Novell management software will also be closely linked, sources say, so information about desktops and servers can be passed to Tivoli's management tools and the Tivoli enterprise tools can help better manage the LAN.

In the Lucent deal, Novell plans to integrate its Novell Directory Services with the management software for Lucent's high-end Cajun P5550 routing switch by early next year. NDS will be integrated with other Lucent switches later in the year. The companies will also work together to speed the development and adoption of directory-enabled networking.

Network directories act as central repositories of information about networks' users and resources-including network hardware when the Lucent-NDS integration is complete. They also provide a single point of administration. Cisco Systems has a similar alliance with Microsoft for Microsoft's forthcoming Active Directory, due to ship with NT Server 5.0.

NDS and other directories are vital to managing user identities and locating network resources, says Novell CEO Eric Schmidt. Identity is the "profound next notion" in moving the networking industry forward, he says.

Chris Stone, senior VP of strategy and corporate development at Novell, says the deal with Lucent "further validates the idea of managing the identity of the user all the way across the wire and the enterprise."

The Lucent alliance is a vote of confidence for Novell, says Matthew Maguire, CIO of Domino's Pizza Inc. in Ann Arbor, Mich., which has a large NetWare installation. "A major telecom player that has both voice and data products is buying into NDS," he says. "That's a huge stake made in the Novell directory infrastructure."
