Kenneth --

The Internet telephony market is evolving so rapidly, it's hard to keep up. The article you posted helps clear up the term "gateway" more than any other I've read recently. Or at least heightens my understanding of the challenges involved in putting voice over the Internet.

As a matter of interest, you may want to check out Ubiquity Software, the latest NN affiliate out of the UK.

The mission of Ubiquity is: "To enable ubiquitous communication by providing methods of accessing and controlling resources available on the network from any computer system connected to it".

Since the formation of Ubiquity Software Corporation, our focus has been on creating solutions to capture the enormous potential of integrating communication equipment to the Intranet / Internet and computing resources.

Ubiquity is a private company with Celtic House Investment Partners as its largest shareholder and Dr Terence Matthews, Chairman & CEO of Newbridge Networks Corporation, as Chairman of the Board of Directors. The Company is a Newbridge Networks Affiliate, Sun Internet Associate, Catalyst Partner, JavaSoft ISV and are leaders in JAVA development to the telecommunications industry.

Ubiquity has been the recipient of four consecutive National Research and Development Awards since 1994 and was the overall winner of the National Multimedia and Innovation Award in 1995.

Helmsman® Communication Server software, created at Ubiquity, offers these significant advantages for users and developers. The Server logically separates the complexities and peculiar characteristics of the network from desktop users. New telecommunication services can be created quickly and delivered effectively by taking traditionally complex voice and data technologies and integrating them at the desktop for simple user access.

Whether the telephony services are based on legacy switched services or Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies, Ubiquity products provide a means of integrating the Computer with the particular Communication technology. This enables both technologies to be supported at one time; facilitating a sensible migration from the present to the future IP based multi-media networks, creating services with levels of hitherto unknown mobility and access.

VoIP systems, when coupled with Ubiquity software products, enable call centres to become virtual and truly distributed. An agent can log onto the system, regardless of location or system. People can work at home without any compromise. Once logged onto the system, the telephone at home becomes a mirror of the office extension with all the embedded computer applications accessed over the same link.

When a call is established, feature controls such as diversion, call back, camp-on etc. are also available from the client's screen. On receipt of a call, the system will identify the caller, interrogate the database locally or remotely and automatically display the relevant caller's details on the screen. Calls and screens can then be transferred across the network. Centrex service delivery is revolutionised using Helmsman; a central office based server delivers telephony over an IP link with either outsourced computing services or internal corporate systems.

Helmsman empowers switchboard operators to become active from any location and any type of PC. Furthermore, directory systems, with embedded call control, are available to all computers not just telephone consoles. Directories can be viewed, features activated, and billing systems checked on demand. In addition, the Server provides flexibility in domestic and business telephone use of the emerging Intelligent Network features. The ease of use and high convenience factor overcomes the objections traditionally associated with subscription and usage of these new services.

The Java based Helmsman software resides on a Web server and passes call control to the switch. The thin client applications can be stored on individual machines or accessed across the LAN. This methodology enables telecommunication services providers to deliver computer telephony applications directly from the Internet eliminating the need to distribute software using traditional methods.

Within the enterprise we work towards an environment where Voice Mail, Fax, Video Telephony (switched or IP), Images, Scheduling and information all sensibly interact with each other within simple and easy to use applications. We can then communicate through the optimum media with the relevant information at the right time and the right place, at the lowest possible cost.

The target market for Ubiquity Software is users of Intranets and communication systems such as PBX's, Routers, Hubs, Media Servers and Databases.>>>>

I don't know which companies are leading in this field, but I'm quite sure the race is fiercely competitive and any lead can be eroded in the blink of an eye.

I don't even pretend to understand or keep up with this segment of the market but I do welcome all input and debate.

Later ---
