SAN DIEGO, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Underscoring its commitment to open systems, NCR Corporation
(NYSE: NCR) today announced it has successfully ported its powerful Teradata(R) database to the
Windows NT(R) Server operating system, including the Enterprise Edition. Teradata for Windows NT is
now generally available around the world for building portable, open and cost- effective data warehouse
solutions.

The move makes Teradata, the leading decision-support database in the high-end marketplace, able to
address the growing market of more data warehousing customers of all sizes and applications than ever
before.

Making data warehousing on Windows NT much easier for organizations to cost-effectively implement,
Teradata for Windows NT brings all the same industrial-strength features, functions and capabilities to the
Windows NT environment that have been proven with UNIX. This includes the ability to handle complex ad
hoc queries, large numbers of concurrent users, and ease of administration that maximizes a company's
people resources. An additional benefit with Teradata for Windows NT is that it now runs on non-NCR
Intel- based hardware platforms.

"We are making our powerful data warehouse engine, Teradata, available in the Windows NT
environment in a truly open and portable fashion," said Bill Eisenman, senior vice president of NCR's
Computer Systems Group. "In doing so, we are bringing the benefits of Teradata -- a critical
decision-making tool -- to businesses and organizations of widely differing sizes and budgets. Porting
Teradata to Windows NT allows the many companies that have made Windows NT their preferred
operating environment to quickly build data warehouses and data marts to reap significant bottom-line
benefits."

Data warehousing is the fast growing decision-support computing process used by businesses to
improve market share, customer retention and overall productivity and profitability. According to Palo Alto
(CA) Management Group, Inc., a leading market research firm, data warehouses will evolve to become
the hub technology for vast corporate information distribution systems, driving what users spend on it from
$15 billion in 1997 to over $113 billion by 2002.

By making its flagship Teradata relational database available in the Windows NT environment, NCR is
virtually exploding the use of data warehousing technology to all parts of the enterprise, enabling its
solutions to better meet the needs of the rapidly expanding number of data warehouse users.

Together, the combination of Teradata and Windows NT provides scalability, portability and low total
cost-of-ownership. And, the ability to have many concurrent users asking complex ad hoc questions with
Teradata can now become a reality for organizations that previously were not able to take advantage of
this technology.

"Microsoft is committed to delivering value to our customers," said Deborah Willingham, Vice President,
Enterprise Customer Unit, Microsoft. "The work that NCR has done to port Teradata to the Windows NT
platform lowers the barriers to entry, enabling more customers to take advantage of this powerful data
warehousing technology."

In Real World Environments

Currently, NCR is working with customers, tools and application vendors, hardware platform vendors, and
channel partners to certify Teradata for Windows NT.

NCR will continue to partner with the leading tool and application providers for Teradata for Windows NT.
Some of those partners include: Cognos (business intelligence solutions), Exchange Applications
(campaign management software), MicroStrategy (mission-critical decision support systems), Synectics
Solutions Ltd. (data analysis services provider) and Quadstone (customer relationship management
software).

The Intel-based hardware platforms that NCR is certifying include Hewlett Packard, Dell and Compaq.
Teradata for Windows NT has been certified for and will now run on the HP NetServer LXr 800, 4-way
Intel Pentium II Xeon-based server. In addition, Teradata for Windows NT has been ported to Compaq
ProLiant and Dell PowerEdge platforms.

In a separate related announcement, NCR today also announced its new channel strategy and the channel
partners with whom it has already formed relationships to sell Teradata, including: Bull, The Coffing
Corporation, ComputerLand of Poland, Nichols Infotec, Strategic Technologies and Systems, Synectics
Solutions Ltd., and Tanning Technology Corporation. NCR will also be formalizing alliances later this
month with channel partners Acxiom Corporation, Cap Gemini America LLC, PricewaterhouseCoopers
and Sapient Corporation, and will continue to expand its channel network.

"As a consultant to companies contemplating data warehousing using the Windows NT operating system,
we were very interested in the early deployment of Teradata for Windows NT," said Stephen Brobst,
managing partner of Strategic Technologies and Systems (STS), a Cambridge, MA, firm that specializes
in the implementation of data warehouses. STS is an NCR channel partner.

"The port to Windows NT will allow customers to deploy data warehouse and data mart implementations
that take advantage of the scalability and manageability features of the Teradata database using the
attractive price points available in the Windows NT marketplace," Brobst stated. "Teradata has always
scaled very well to the very high-end -- and the Windows NT port demonstrates a capability to scale down
the implementation as well as to scale it up."

Customers involved in NCR's early availability program for Teradata for Windows NT include Bombardier
Capital, an international financial services provider and Granahorrar, a leading Colombian savings and
loan financial institution. In addition, NCR's own Global Sales Support (GSS) Division has also
successfully deployed Teradata for Windows NT as part of its beta program. The GSS data warehouse
provides critical information about customers, contracts and sales to NCR's 35,000 employees around
the globe.

According to Todd Walter, NCR's Chief Technology Officer for its Parallel Systems Division, "GSS was
impressed with the performance of Teradata for Windows NT compared to our previous UNIX version, as
well as its ability to support GSS' web-based sales and marketing applications. And, the GSS IT team
found that installation was easy and upgrades were painless. Several system upgrades were performed
during the course of this early field trial with each upgrade performing seamlessly, according to Walter.
"As a result, GSS will be migrating its database applications to Teradata for Windows NT," Walter said.

About the Technology

With its shared-nothing parallel architecture, NCR's Teradata database will be able to scale from 10
gigabytes in an SMP (symmetric multi-processing) environment to more than 100 terabytes on Windows
NT in an MPP (massively parallel processing) environment -- as it can in the proven UNIX environment
today. By leveraging tools and utilities available with Windows NT, Teradata will be able to outperform
competing databases at the smaller data volumes in complex, business questions with multiple users that
are typical of the data mart market; bringing with it easier installation and administration.

In addition, it will bring Windows NT into the enterprise market, by providing scalability to multiple
terabytes of data as a company's needs inevitably grow -- on average more than doubling every 18
months. While the scalability of other databases may be constrained by the limitations of operating in a
single node Windows NT environment, Teradata for Windows NT will leverage multiple SMP nodes, using
NCR's patented BYNET high-speed interconnect to provide scalability for multi-terabyte-size data
warehouses.

Pricing and Availability

Teradata for Windows NT will initially be available to run on leading Intel-based SMP servers, including a
single node NCR WorldMark 4300 or 4400 server and non-NCR hardware platforms. Porting of Teradata
to Windows NT for MPP systems is slated for mid-1999. Pricing for Teradata on Windows NT is identical
to NCR's UNIX version of Teradata, beginning at $25,000 for a 2-way SMP server; and $50,000 for a
4-way SMP server. And, to help ensure ongoing system availability, NCR offers its Enterprise System
Support (ESS) services to enable customers to utilize the Teradata database for effective, time- sensitive
decision-making.
