fasttrak, IDE/SCSI, CD-RW: reply to ZP

I'll certainly give some follow-up on the fasttrak once I have a better handle on its quirks, strengths, and limitations.

Would formatting the HDD's on the IDE channels as extended only partitions cause the FastTrack to boot? I am considering formatting some drives with extended partitions only in a future design as it will help preserve drive letter integrity.

Apparently so. This was how I had mine set up (for the same reason--preserving drive letter and booting integrity.)

This makes some sense to me. What doesn't make sense is why they aren't recognized in 95 once they're disabled in the bios. CDs and other ATAPI devices aren't affected by this. Perhaps I need a driver update. Anyone?

I saw the HP announcement too. I can't recall why the remark seemed credible/more than a random musing. It's probably wrong.

ZP & All:

Can most notebooks have their CPU upgraded?

I have a Compaq Armada bought re-furbished - and would like to upgrade the 150Mhz processor. Otherwise, it's fairly up to date.

Plextor CDR/RW Update...(Terastor Update...still vaporware)

The Plextor 8X record 20X read CDR drives plextor.com look like they are shipping. Two dealers are advertising on Price Watch..best price $472

The disaster recovery software shipped with the retail version still looks interesting..claim is record to CDR and then restore with a CD boot.

Plextor now has specs and January 99 release date on their web page for the Plextor CDRW (4R/2RW/20.. plextor.com }

No listing in Price Watch. Next International neqx.com lists the Plextor CDRW drive with "CALL" in the price column.
