George,

I can't bring myself to reconciliation with what Dr. Mahatir was with what I have seen since I came here three years ago. There can be little doubt about the shabby status of democracy here. Tenets we hold very dear in the west are frequently lost here. But then there can be little doubt about the incredible improvement in the lives of Malaysians since Mahatir took the reigns of government. And it is arrogance to an extreme to assume that the only good democracy is American democracy. I do think there is a lesson or two here. One is that regimes can, and most often do, overstay their welcome without a constitutional limitation. Secondly, abuses of power, like beauty, are in the eye of the beholder.

I share your dubious view of Anwar. It is too much presto chango for comfort.

Now, back to some humor. Dr. M is very fond of official grand openings. He keeps up an incredible pace of these kinds of appearances when he isn't traveling. But in the English reporting here, the resultant language often paints a picture that otherwise was not intended. I don't know if anyone else will be as amused by this as I was but here is a couple of lines from a local news story today:

"no one benefited from the incident. Instead the country's image suffered" said Dr. Mahatir when reporters asked him to comment on the rioting. Earlier he launched the high grade Terus Maju fertiliser at the Padi museum.

I wonder which way he aimed it. <G>

Best,
Stitch
