Compaq Worldwide PC Leadership Expands in Third Quarter October 26, 1998 09:05 AM HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1998-- U.S. Market Share Shows Strong Gains in Quarter Compaq Computer Corporation's number one PC market share leadership position grew worldwide and in the U.S. during the third quarter, according to estimates released by International Data Corporation (IDC) today. On a worldwide basis, Compaq's market share grew to 14.4 percent in the third quarter as the company shipped nearly 1 1/4 million more units than its nearest competitor. Compaq's PC market share in the U.S. grew to 15.8 percent in the third quarter from 14.4 percent in the previous quarter. At the same time, the company's nearest competitor saw a decline in U.S. market share. "We're very pleased Compaq increased its lead in both market share and number of units shipped to customers during the quarter," said Enrico Pesatori, Senior Vice President, Corporate Marketing. "Building this strong momentum in our core PC business while taking decisive steps to realize synergies from the Digital acquisition is a significant achievement." "In addition, this performance demonstrates Compaq was able to increase its PC industry leadership while continuing to reduce channel inventories," Pesatori said. Compaq's channel inventory levels dropped from an average of 3.5 weeks at the end of the second quarter to an average of three weeks in the third quarter.
