U.K. Operator Selects Tellabs to Remove Most Background Noise From Mobile Phone Calls

Cellnet to Install Tellabs Echo Cancellers in 13 Switching Sites

October 26, 1998 10:38 AM

LISLE, Ill., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Cellnet, a leading mobile telephone service operator in the United Kingdom, is deploying Tellabs EC Duo(TM) 8000 echo cancellers in a new product rollout plan that is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. Cellnet is installing EC Duo 8000 echo cancellers in 13 switching centers across the U.K. Cellnet is the first operator to deploy the Tellabs EC Duo 8000 system with noise cancellation.

Cellnet said it selected Tellabs because of its echo cancellers' unique combination of call-quality capabilities, including the ability to suppress annoying background noise on mobile phone calls. "Cellnet's customers will notice real differences when making calls," said Mike Tiplady, director of technology at Cellnet.

"There's no longer a need to shout into a phone," Tiplady said. "Our customers will be able to speak at normal conversation levels whether on mobile-to-mobile calls or mobile-to-landline calls -- even in noisy environments, such as in pubs, on busy streets or crowded commuter trains."

By differentiating between the caller's voice and background sound and, in effect, amplifying the speaker's voice, the Tellabs echo cancellers can reduce background noise by 75 percent while retaining that element of background sound needed for natural sounding conversation.

This breakthrough in providing optimum speech quality is a result of more than two years of research and development by both Tellabs and Cellnet, according to Chris Royden, Tellabs vice president of sales for Europe.

"This represents a key strategic relationship for our two companies," Royden said. "This technology will provide high call quality for both mobile and landline users, helping build long-term customer loyalty."

Based on Tellabs' advanced HDRP (high-density RISC processor) technology, the bi-directional EC Duo 8000 echo canceller provides the core platform for a set of powerful software tools that optimize levels in a call by distinguishing a caller's voice from background noise -- equivalent to amplifying the caller's speech. All forms of echo, including acoustic and hybrid echoes, are eliminated by the patented technology of Tellabs digital echo canceller systems.

Cellnet launched its network service in 1985 and today has the biggest digital network in Britain, offering coverage to 99 percent of the population in the U.K. It is investing more than U.S. $1.5 million every working day to improve the quality of its network. Cellnet aims by 2000 to treble "call- ability," the call capacity of its network, to keep ahead of expected explosive growth in mobile phone use.

Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services voice and data transport and network access systems. The company's products are used worldwide by the providers of communications services. Tellabs, Inc., stock is listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market (TLAB).

3Com Outperforms Five Competitors in U.S. Navy'sIT-21 Certification Tests
October 30, 1998 09:31 AM

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 30, 1998--

Leading Networking Provider's ATM and Fast Ethernet Switches Deliver Fastest Response Times to Qualify for Billion-Dollar Overhaul of Navy Information Systems

3Com Corporation COMS today announced that its asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and Fast Ethernet switches led five competitors in vendor certification tests for the U.S. Navy's Information Technology for the 21st Century (IT-21) initiative.

Launched in 1997, IT-21 is the Navy's billion-dollar program to upgrade networked communications and data delivery in all fleets and shore-based facilities using advanced, commercially available technologies.

The tests, which were conducted by the Navy at a testing laboratory in Norfolk, Va., pitted 3Com(R) ATM-to-Fast Ethernet networks against those from Cisco Systems, Fore Systems, Cabletron, Xylan and Bay Networks. Each vendor's configuration was required to complete an office automation application test suite developed for the Navy by EDS.

The test suite included Microsoft Office as well as the Navy's Joint Maritime Command Information System (JMCIS), a client/server application generally used onboard Navy ships. Vendors were evaluated on their ability to deliver 155 megabit per second (Mbps) ATM connections and 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet links to 10 workstations respectively.

Results compiled from averaging three executions of the test suite clearly showed 3Com to provide the fastest connectivity to both ATM and Fast Ethernet workstations. 3Com connections to ATM workstations averaged 213 seconds compared to its closest competitor, Cisco, which completed them in 278 seconds.

3Com links to Fast Ethernet workstations averaged 215.9 seconds in contrast to Cisco, which finished second at 264 seconds. 3Com also was the only vendor whose ATM workstations outperformed its Fast Ethernet workstations, a fact that will allow the Navy to deploy 3Com ATM systems more cost-effectively to support IT-21.

"3Com's leadership in IT-21 testing underscores our commitment and ability to provide the Navy and other military branches with the highest performing networking systems to anchor their mission-critical applications," said Matt Galligan, 3Com's director of IT-21 services.

"The testing demonstrates how well 3Com can fulfill the Navy's bandwidth and application requirements and that we are an excellent partner to work with to satisfy the service's full range of IT-21 objectives."

3Com, which provides scalable, high-speed enterprise networks, to date has received IT-21 certification for eight products, the most of any vendor. The Santa Clara-based vendor is also actively working with several Naval installations to help them build IT-21-compliant networks. Most recently, 3Com deployed a $5 million multimedia, ATM network at the Naval Postgraduate School, the U.S. Navy's world-renowned academic institution in Monterey, Calif.

"We're taking a global view of IT-21 and plan to do all we can to support the initiative at Naval installations across the U.S. and the world," said Galligan.
