NorthPoint Communications Receives Intel Investment

Business Wire - October 26, 1998 09:29

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1998--NorthPoint Communications,
Inc.(SM), a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) specializing in high-speed data transport,
today announced that Intel Corporation has invested in the company.

Financial details were not disclosed.

According to Intel, the investment is part of Intel's overall strategy to promote broadband offerings to
business and residential customers. NorthPoint is a nationwide provider of always-on, high-bandwidth
data transport designed to deliver business quality to Internet access. NorthPoint markets its data
services to small and medium-sized businesses through partnerships with local, regional, and national
network service providers (NSPs).

Earlier this summer, NorthPoint announced that @Work(tm), the business-focused division of
@Home Network(tm), had made a minority equity investment in the company. @Work also resells
NorthPoint data services as an NSP partner, and is actively working with NorthPoint on joint
marketing activities, including an upcoming eight-city seminar series targeting potential business
customers. Intel is also an investor in @Home.

"NorthPoint's strategy has been to establish a nationwide presence very rapidly, rolling out high-speed
access services to key metropolitan areas -- ten this year, with 14 more planned for next year," said
Michael Malaga, president and CEO of NorthPoint. "The investment capital from Intel and @Work
helps us speed the deployment of broadband, always-on connections to businesses."

Intel makes small, minority investments in companies that it believes can help create new uses for
computers or enhance existing computing capabilities. Such investments, Intel believes, can help grow
the overall computing market segment and make computing more productive and enjoyable for users.
