DenverTechie, that is why HFC telephony may be a long way from primary line status. That is also why 21stcentury chose copper for their telephone lines,on such an advanced system.
They can use less battery back-up for non-critical use,but how in the world they are going to get to primary line status is the question.

I picked this out of a typical, "yada, yada, yada" press release from Cisco. The real meat of it was the last sentence. Another significant stamp of approval for HFC solution.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct 26 - Bellcore Corp. and Cisco Systems said Monday they formed an alliance that bolsters Cisco's access to core technologies that form the basic software operating system used to run existing phone networks.....Yada, yada, yada....Then comes,
