'Delling' to please!! This just in from Austin. Paul: I heard mutual funds do both selling and buying in Oct since the fiscal year for most of the MFs end in Oct.It is very likely that they have dumped the bad ones and some good one already and it is probable that they will do some serious buying at the end of the month to prop their portfolio so this could bode well for companies like DELL. ==========================================Dell's sales still strong in 3rd quarter Round Rock company gains on Houston rival Compaq for market share ---------------------------------------------------------------------- By Tim GreenSource:American-Statesman Staff Posted: Oct. 26, 1998 Dell Computer Corp. continued to post strong personal computer sales in the third quarter and gained market share, according to figures released today by Dataquest Inc. Dell, based in Round Rock, remains No. 3 worldwide with an 8.4 percent share of the market, and No. 2 in the United States with a 13.4 percent share. Compaq remains No. 1, but it lost market share to its major competitors from the third quarter last year. Dell continues to gain on Compaq in the United States, the biggest PC market, shipping just 150,000 fewer computers than its Houston rival in the third quarter. Compaq shipped 1.4 million PCs; Dell, 1.27 million; and IBM Corp., 845,000. "If Dell can maintain its growth rate, it's only a matter of two quarters before they will have sole possession" of the top spot in the United States, said Bill Schaub, a Dataquest vice president. Compaq still has a wide lead in global sales. It has a 13.7 percent share, compared with IBM Corp.'s 8.6 percent and Dell's 8.4 percent. Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group Inc., compiles the figures based on reports from the PC companies. For the industry overall, worldwide PC sales increased a healthy 13.7 percent over the 1997 third quarter, according to Dataquest. Most of the growth came the United States and Europe. "Combined shipments in the U.S. and Europe comprise nearly 60 percent of the world's demand for PCs, and these two regions are experiencing exceptional PC unit growth,"Schaub said. Direct sellers Dell and Gateway Inc. made the most headway in the third quarter. Dell's worldwide growth rate was 61 percent and Gateway's was 37.5 percent. Dell has posted 12 straight quarters of better than 50 percent growth in the United States. The introduction of the iMac gave Apple Computer Corp. a slight boost, Schaub said. Its market share grew to 5.25 percent from 4.75 percent. "Although was a good quarter for themselves, it makes little difference in the PC world," he said.
