ASML warns of lower profits in '98

VELDHOVEN, The Netherlands - ASM Lithography here today said net income in 1998 "will be substantially below 1997 levels."
In an advance report on earnings, ASML president Willem Maris said net income in the first half of this year net will "fall to around the break-even level, compared with $73.7 million (140 million guilders for the year ago-period.
"Capacity expansions by our main customers have been postponed. This means that our earnings are squeezed as we continue our intensive R&D during this period of weakened sales," Maris said.

BTW, I heard one of the financial networks this morning, saying that AMAT was going to have layoffs. This in spite of the recent press release which said that the layoffs were complete.
