France Alstom To Build 16 Power Substations For Mexico CFE

MEXICO CITY (Dow Jones)--Anglo-French engineering company Alstom SA (ALS) will build 16 power substations in Mexico for the country's state-owned electrical utility Federal Electricity Commission, or CFE.

In a press release Wednesday, the CFE said the cost of the construction project will be $62 million.

The power substations will be located in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan and Aguascalientes, the press release said.

About $25 million of the total investment will be assigned to substations located in northern Aguascalientes state.

Construction and testing is expected to be completed in 11 months, the CFE said.

Spain's Telefonica Awards Contract To Alcatel, Temasa

MADRID (Dow Jones)--Telecommunications giant Telefonica SA (TEF) said Monday that it has awarded a contract to Alcatel Submarine Network, Alcatel Espana and Temasa to install three networks of fiber optic underwater cabling in the Canary Islands.

The total cost of the project is 1.68 billion pesetas (ESP), said Telefonica. ($1=ESP140.30).

Telefonica said the new telephone lines will allow telephony, videoconferences, data transmission and multi-media services. Around 426.4 kilometers of fiber optics will be laid, the telecommunications company said.

All sections of the new network are to be in operation by the fourth quarter of 1999, Telefonica said.

Bertrand...do you know if ALA owns 25% of Alstom? How about Alcatel Submarine Network and Alcatel Espana? Are these wholly owned by ALA?
