MW, You seem to imply that cable companies buying the GIC 2000 digital settop boxes have only one option (SRCM), if they want to add internet services... Wrong-o bud. Not only are there other companies with products, but currently SRCM has no product to offer, only an untested "black box" that industry insiders say will not even work due to its memory requirements that are above what is provided in GIC's 2000 series boxes. That may be all good and well to sucker Euro investors at bogus dog & pony shows into buying stock, but it don't cut it here in the good 'ol USA... SRCM needs to get a beta up and running to see if they even have a product to sell. To say SRCM will dominate a market - when they have no product, is very SRCM like, but pretty ridiculous in the real world. Meanwhile others do have working, tested products (see WorldGate Press Release below). WorldGate can run on the advanced analog boxes AND the new digital GIC boxes. Not only can WorldGate run on both boxes, but they have deployed and are up and running in St. Louis, MO with Charter Communications - you remember Charter, they dumped SRCM's joke service after SRCM's service failed in Charter's real world testing... SO, when you assume SRCM will get a bunch of cable company contracts - "because they are the only company to offer a digital settop internet product", well you are sadly mistaken in more than one way. Not only is SRCM not the only company to offer a digital settop box product, but SRCM really has no product yet... Although they do have a long history of making bold claims that never materialize. IMO SRCM will never get the bugs worked out of a saleable product before the new settop boxes (GIC 5000, MOT Blackbird, etc), technologically leapfrog and replace the GIC 2000 boxes. Anyone buying into the current stock run had better watch out. SRCM has no product and with $120mm of debt, burning $3-5 million a Q (they only have about $13 mm left of working capital left), you can expect them to go broke here pretty darn quick. All comments IMO... **************************wgate.com INTERNET ACCESS SERVICE NOW AVAILABLE TO CONSUMERS FOR THE FIRST TIME AT CABLE MODEM DATA RATES THROUGH THEIR TV SETS USING DIGITAL SET-TOP CONVERTERS WorldGate Service uses Current Generation of General Instrument Digital Cable TV Set-top Converters Bensalem, Pa., October 6, 1998 -- WorldGate Communications, Inc. and General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) announced today that WorldGate's Internet TV Over CableSM service is now available on GI's digital set-top terminals. The WorldGateSM service, which is currently being deployed on GI's full-line of advanced analog terminals, now provides Internet access over a TV at data rates up to ISDN (128 Kbps). WorldGate, by utilizing the advanced technology available in GI's new generation digital set-top converters, significantly increases Internet access data rates to equal those achieved by cable broadband modems (27 Mbps). A rate which is over 450 times faster than currently achieved by stand-alone TV Internet access set-top appliances such as WebTV. "WorldGate is proud to be the first company to bring the high-speed Internet access now available only to PC owners to the television set," said Hal Krisbergh, chairman and CEO of WorldGate Communications. The first and only company to successfully launch an international cable Internet service to the TV through advanced analog cable converters, WorldGate is now the first and only Internet application working on digital cable converter set-top technology. The WorldGate platform in the GI box is intended to be an open platform which allows third party applications, such as video-on-demand, enhanced broadcasting and other related services to operate compatibly with the WorldGate service. WorldGate's future enhancement plans include General Instrument's newer-generation digital set-top terminals. These set-tops will offer such features as a double-speed processor and increased memory while continuing to combine MPEG-2 digital video and Dolby AC3 digital audio with real-time interactive capabilities. WorldGate also plans to integrate with GI's advanced digital platform, "Open Cable", which will deliver an unprecedented level of processing and graphics capabilities to the digital set-top terminal. Using a high powered RISC processor and a high-end 3D and picture-in-graphics capable graphics platform, many industry insiders believe the DCT-5000+ represents the leading edge of next generation digital cable terminals.
