FAA Warns Pilots About Pfizer's Viagra, Dallas Paper Reports

Bloomberg News

Dallas, Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc.'s impotence drug
Viagra can impair the ability of airline pilots to distinguish
between blue and green, the two colors often used in cockpit
instrument displays and taxiway lights at airports, the Dallas
Morning News reported. Federal Aviation Administration officials
said that flight doctors are being asked to tell pilots not to fly
within six hours of taking Viagra. Air Force Doctor Donato
Borillo, who wrote about Viagra's visual effects on flying in the
Federal Air Surgeons Medical Bulletin, said that while only about
3 percent of patients experience visual trouble, the blue-green
impairment could be dangerous, the paper said.

Earlier this month, there were reports of Pentagon plans to
spend about $55 million in 1999 to provide Viagra to U.S. troops
and retired military personnel.
