MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1998--Minerva Systems, Inc. announced today the Minerva VNP(tm) (Video Network Platform), a video processing platform designed to deliver broadcast-quality video to IP networks.

The new product combines Minerva's expertise in video encoding with the latest in embedded processors, real-time operating systems, and VLSI compression devices. The Minerva VNP offers the highest quality, most reliable and most cost-effective video processing platform for streaming video over networks.

The first release of the Minerva VNP is targeted at service providers and systems integrators who need reliable and economical MPEG encoders for delivering "video rich" applications such as distance learning, training, surveillance, business television and video conferencing. Integrators and service providers will combine the Minerva VNP with a high-performance network infrastructure, video servers, set-top boxes, and PC decoders to create complete MPEG-based video network solutions.

"The Minerva VNP is a flexible video processing network appliance that can be easily integrated with third-party software and hardware. Based on its exceptional price/performance, users can now justify large-scale deployment of their applications," says Reed Majors, Director of Product Marketing for Minerva's Video Networking business. "The Minerva VNP with its extensive development environment makes it possible for systems integrators and service providers to offer robust video network solutions."

About the Minerva VNP

In the past, MPEG CODECs (Encoder/Decoder) for IP networks were large and complex devices, relying heavily on PC components, hard drives, and PC operating systems. Minerva has set a new standard by building a "modem like" device that contains a high-performance embedded CPU, powerful VLSI encoder and decoder devices supplied by C - Cube Microsystems, and a robust embedded real-time operating system. The core processing engine is highly programmable and can perform a broad range of video processing functions. The first release of Minerva VNP can be scaled from an efficient low bit rate MPEG-1 encoder to a high-performance full CCIR 601 resolution MPEG-2 encoder.
VNP is a true plug-and-play network device. It is controllable from a web browser anywhere on the network and features a built-in Ethernet 10/100 BaseT interface. Integration with third-party products is achieved through a well-defined set of APIs. Minerva VNP is easy to install, operate, and maintain, hence reducing overall cost of ownership.

Partners and Systems Integrators

Minerva has been working closely with several leading manufacturers to integrate VNP with network equipment, video servers, set-top boxes, and application software. A number of systems integrators, service providers, and OEMs are currently working on video network solutions using Minerva's VNP.
"Minerva VNP is the ideal product for streaming video over IP and ATM networks," says Stan Kluz of the ESnet Program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. "VNP is an MPEG video network platform that we can deploy on our network."

"The Minerva VNP provides the best available combination of features, performance, and price. It is a perfect fit for SourceNet's video-to-the-home solution," states Eddie Drake, Project Manager, SourceNet Corporation.

Pricing and Availability

The Minerva VNP starts at $12,995 for MPEG-1 and low bit rate MPEG-2 encoding. The product will begin shipping in December 1998.

NetTV/DVD in the classroom.............................

NetTV Introduces Low-cost Classroom Presentation Computer - DVD-Explorer - at Tel-Ed '98 Conference
03:14 p.m Oct 27, 1998 Eastern
SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 1998--NetTV introduced Tuesday its DVD-Explorer(TM), a line of classroom presentation computers that combine DVD and CD-ROM-based learning with full Internet and display capabilities. DVD-Explorer will be demonstrated this week at Tel-Ed '98, an International education technology conference, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

"With DVD-Explorer, NetTV provides an unrivaled 'all-in-one' learning-solution for students and teachers at all levels" explains NetTV president Ron Perkes. "NetTV designed DVD-Explorer to be a low-cost Windows 98-based computer for teachers using presentation programs (PowerPoint, Authorware, HyperStudio and others), the Internet, DVD, and multimedia CD-ROM's in place of the traditional classroom chalkboard. DVD-Explorer is eminently better suited for classroom presentations than a standard desktop computer."

"The day of the 'One-Computer Classroom' is here with the DVD-Explorer," says Perkes. "When you combine DVD-Explorer with NetTV's 29-inch, 34-inch, or 38-inch progressively-scanned PC+TV(TM) Monitors, you get up to five times the clarity and image stability of a standard television. The NetTV solution makes the Internet, text, and multimedia appear much sharper and clearer than they do on a standard television -- this means all the students in the class can see and hear the lesson from a single presentation display. Imagine the possibilities when you have a classroom presentation system that accepts inputs from computers, VCRs, cable TV, standard video, and digital video equipment. These systems will provide the highest quality computer-aided training well into the next decade and will support Digital TV using NetTV's upcoming low-cost DTV compatible add-on module. This is extremely important to schools who don't know when, or if, funding for technology products will be available in the future."

Michael Carrier, NetTV Director of Marketing, explains why NetTV calls this presentation computer, DVD-Explorer. "DVD is a rich and powerful new medium that has a tremendous potential in education. NetTV's new presentation computer makes possible the exploration of a vast array of DVD content previously unavailable in the classroom. DVD-Explorer(TM) engages students to seek out information by capitalizing on their fascination with the Internet, multimedia, DVD and other high-tech gadgetry. DVD-Explorer magnifies student imagination and desire to learn by propelling their focus to the lesson at hand. We expect systems such as the DVD-Explorer to revolutionize teaching methods in much the same way A/V equipment did in the 1960's. Schools and universities across North America are already using NetTV products for a variety of classroom and research applications."

DVD-Explorer standard features include a wireless keyboard and remote control, DVD player, Windows 98, and a network adapter. DVD-Explorer prices start under $1,000 with a mid-range model at $1,500 and the top of the line at around $2,000. DVD-Explorer is available with an optional television tuner.

DVD-Explorer is backed by a full one-year warranty on parts & labor and lifetime toll-free customer service support. An optional on-site service program is available.
